WHAT IS MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese medicine that stimulates and increases the flow of vital energy, Qi (pronounced "chee"), throughout the body. Chinese medicine is a complete medical system that has been employed and developed for over 2000 years to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness. It can help the body heal more quickly and more completely, enhance the immune system, and augment the capacity for work, pleasure, and creativity. Acupuncture treatments can be added to conventional Western medical treatments plans. At times acupuncture can be used instead of medications or surgery or be used when medications and surgery fail to improve symptoms. The acupuncture method improves the body's functioning, promotes natural healing, alleviates pain, and regulates the immune response. This is accomplished by inserting needles at very precise acupuncture points throughout the body. Acupuncture points are areas of decreased electrical resistance. These areas have been plotted out by Chinese practitioners for over 2000 years and have been shown to be effective in treating many conditions. At times gentle heat or electrical stimulation is applied. The physician will make a diagnosis based upon Chinese medicine. In order to arrive at a diagnosis, the physician will take a history of your illness and conduct a physical examination. The examination will also include an assessment of your pulse and tongue. Once the physician has made a diagnosis, he will choose acupuncture points appropriate for your treatment.

Medical Acupuncture is different from ordinary acupuncture. Acupuncture is a very old medical art and has many approaches to learning and practicing it. Medical acupuncture is a term used to differentiate acupuncture being performed by a medical doctor (M. D.) trained and licensed in Western Medicine who also has comprehensive training in acupuncture as a specialty practice.
